McCain/Palin By 4%
According to polling released by Zogby yesterday, the race for the Presidency is November has swung to favor the Republicans after both conventions ended.
Zogby reports that in polling concluded yesterday the results were: McCain/Palin 49.7% over Obama/Biden 45.9%. This poll also included the opportunity for respondents to reply “other”.
Zogby notes:
Pollster John Zogby: “Clearly, Palin is helping the McCain ticket. She has high favorability numbers, and has unified the Republican Party. The striking thing here in this poll is that McCain has pulled ahead among Catholics by double-digits. On the other hand, Palin is not helping with likely voting women who are not aligned with either political party. The undecided independent women voters decreased this week from 15% to 7%, but those women went to Obama. Palin is also helping among men, conservatives, notably with suburban and rural voters, and with frequent Wal-Mart shoppers, who tend to be “values” voters who like a good value for their money.”
McCain’s favorability rating increased from 50% favorable last week to 57% favorable now, a significant jump that indicates the GOP convention was a success. Among independent voters, 61% now have a favorable impression of him, compared to just 49% who said the same a week ago.
Nearly half - 49% - said they had a favorable opinion of Barack Obama, while 50% they had a negative impression of him. Among independent voters, 47% gave him favorable marks, compared to 46% who said the same thing last week.
This poll was conducted among 2,321 LIKELY voters.
McCain Camp Rescues American Flags from Obama Rally
Democrats are not caring for their Stars and Stripes. At least that’s the message out of John McCain’s campaign.
McCain supporters, claiming they rescued 12,000 miniature American flags from the site of Barack Obama’s nomination acceptance speech last Thursday, redistributed the orphan flags to audience members ahead of a McCain rally in Colorado Springs on Saturday.
The move was an overt swipe at Obama from a campaign whose motto has been “country first.” But
Democratic convention organizers claimed the flags were not going to be discarded — but instead were snatched from the site of Obama’s historic address to carry out a “cheap political stunt.”
McCain supporters said the flags were discovered by a vendor at Denver’s Invesco Field after the conclusion of the Democratic National Convention. The vendor supposedly found trash bags full of flags in and near garbage bins, and turned them over to the McCain campaign.
Boy Scouts were sorting through 84 bags of flags in Colorado on Saturday, before a McCain supporter had veterans distribute them to the audience.
“We want to find good homes for these flags,” radio host Dan Caplis said at the rally, adding that whatever flags remained would be placed at memorials throughout Colorado.
Audience members, who booed when Caplis announced that the flags were left in Denver, waved the flags and chanted “U.S.A” before McCain arrived at the rally with his running mate, Sarah Palin.
Obama has faced attacks on his patriotism since the beginning of the Democratic primary race and has set up a Web site specifically designed to fight such charges.
The McCain campaign has denied questioning Obama’s patriotism, and even released a statement Friday calling Obama’s most recent comments on the matter “hysterical.”
U.S. Code says the proper method for disposing of an American flag is actually burning, provided it is “no longer a fitting emblem for display.”
Speak English or GTFO
One reason that immigrants (legal and illegal) fail to assimilate into American culture is simply they can’t speak or understand English. But then again, why should they learn? Even our voting pamphlets are written in several languages. On the phone, we hear “press 1 for English, press 2 for Spanish….etc.”
I get advertisements in the mail touting cell phones and they’re written entirely in some sort of Asian language. Could be Japanese, Korean, Chinese….I have no clue. But then again, this is the United States of America, so I shouldn’t have to learn some other country’s language as long as I’m living in this country.
During my years in the Marine Corps, I visited many foreign countries and tried to learn enough of the language to get by. I learned how to order a cup o’ coffee in a café, learned how to ask a pretty girl for a date…and like I say…just enough to get by; In Italy, France, Greece, Japan, Korea, the Philippines, Iceland, I could ask a vendor “how much” in the native language.
No, I wasn’t fluent in any of the languages, but I learned enough to show that I cared, and had an interest in learning. But, we don’t see that “care’ and “interest” in many of the immigrants of today. But why should they care when we have signs in stores written in Spanish, telephone answerers who’re willing to answer in any language the person wants. There’s no incentive to learn English.
If we’re going to make it so convenient for immigrants (legal and illegal) NOT TO LEARN ENGLISH, where’s the incentive? We should take a page out of the LPGA (Women’s golf) new rules. The LPGA will require all players to speak English starting in 2009. Players who’ve been members for two years face suspension if they can’t pass an oral evaluation of English skills. Now THAT’S what I call incentive.
RNC Convention
Now that the Hollywood hoopla of the Democrat party’s convention is over, it’s the Republican party’s turn for hoopla. What we heard from the Democrat politicos is that by electing Barack Obama, this country will be a new country, admired and respected by all the other countries in the world. No details on just how this will be accomplished.
This country already supplies more foreign aid around the world than any other country and it hasn’t seemed to have created many new friends. From the democrat podium, we heard that if Obama is elected, he’ll create five million new “green” jobs. No details on just how this will be accomplished.
We heard that democrats will provide “healthcare for all”. No details on how this will be accomplished since MediCare and medicaid is on the verge of going broke. If a person were to believe all the promises emanating from the Denver convention, electing Obama will usher in Utopia. (Kinda reminds me of past promises of two cars in every garage and a chicken in every pot.) Some of you may remember that.
Then there was Bill Clinton’s promise of a middle class tax cut….which never came. Remember his excuse after he was elected? “I’d give you a tax cut but you wouldn’t spend it right.”
Come to think of it….it’s also reminiscent of the promise of forty acres and a mule.
The bottom line here folks is simply this: It’s easy during the emotional outpouring during electioneering to promise anything and everything to everybody. Once elected, however, delivering on all those promises is the hard part.
That’s why astute voters will take it all with a grain of salt…knowing the grain of salt is just about all they’ll get. Then, four years down the road, we get to do it all over again.
